Buckeyes lose thriller to Longhorns as Big Ten finished 1-6 in Bowls.
Posted by: grobber33 on Tuesday, January 06, 2009 - 04:26 AM

GLENDALE---Big Ten teams finished a miserable Bowl season at 1-6, the worst of any Conference. But Ohio State gave it their best shot.As for their opponents, left out of the national title game, Colt McCoy and Texas made the most of their trip to the Fiesta Bowl.McCoy hit Quan Cosby for a 26-yard touchdown with 16 seconds to play, lifting third-ranked Texas to a 24-21 victory over No. 10 Ohio State on Monday night. The Buckeyes nearly pulled off the upset behind quarterbacks Terrelle Pryor and Todd Boeckman but instead went down to another disappointing bowl loss.McCoy, the Heisman Trophy runner-up, calmly led the Longhorns 78 yards in 11 plays and 1:42 without calling a timeout. On the touchdown, Cosby caught a short pass, slipped a tackle and sprinted toward the goal line before diving into the end zone. The Longhorns (12-1) rebounded after Ohio State (10-3) had taken a 21-17 lead on a 15-yard run by Dan Herron with 2:05 to go.That score came five minutes after Boeckman hit Pryor for a 5-yard score to cut Texas' lead to 17-15. Pryor's pass on the 2-point conversion was incomplete. For most of the night, the Buckeyes stifled the high-powered Longhorns, who averaged 43.9 points this season but mustered only a field goal in the first half. They didn't lead until a nifty third-quarter touchdown run by McCoy, who also threw for 414 yards and two scores with an interception. The Longhorns hoped to use the Fiesta Bowl to persuade voters they deserved the top spot in The Associated Press Top 25, their only hope for a piece of a national championship.

Harangody carries Irish to win over Hoyas
Posted by: grobber33 on Tuesday, January 06, 2009 - 03:08 AM
|
SOUTH BEND---Luke Harangody didn't let being in foul trouble against an athletic Georgetown team bother him.Harangody thought he would spend about 10 minutes on the bench when he picked up his fourth foul with 15:17 left and the 13th-ranked Fighting Irish up by six points.Instead, he sat less than four minutes, then scored 10 points and grabbed five rebounds down the stretch to help Notre Dame beat the ninth-ranked Hoyas 73-67 on Monday night and end a five-game losing streak to Georgetown.Harangody finished with 31 points and 11 rebounds, back in.Harangody, who had never scored more than 13 points in three previous games against Georgetown, scored Notre Dame's final 13 points of the first half to give the Irish an 11-point lead. The Hoyas closed to 71-67 with 15 seconds left when Chris Wright scored inside, but Kyle McAlarney, who missed the front end of a 1-and-1 14 seconds earlier, made two free throws with 12 seconds left.McAlarney, who was 1-of-5 from 3-point range in a loss Saturday at St. John's, was 5-for-11 from 3-point range Monday night, finishing with 17 points. Tory Jackson added 10 points and seven assists.Freshman Greg Monroe led Georgetown (10-3, 1-2) with 21 points and 10 rebounds. Wright added 13 points and DaJuan Summers finished with 11, his second-lowest point total this season.ND (11-3, 2-1) extended the nation's longest home winning streak to 44 games, including 19 in the conference, one shy of the Big East record set by Pittsburgh in 2004.The Hoyas were one of only two Big East teams the Irish hadn't beaten during that streak. They also haven't beaten Rutgers, which visits the Joyce Center on Feb. 25.

OK, get ready, here comes Milton Bradley!
Posted by: grobber33 on Monday, January 05, 2009 - 11:46 PM
|
The Cubs went ahead and did it! They have come to terms with switch hitting outfielder Milton Bradley on a three year deal that will pay the 31 year old an estimated $30 million. He must pass a physical before this deal becomes official. Bradley batted .321 for Texas this past season with a .436 on base pct,and .563 slugging pct. He's had problems off the field with different Clubs. While playing for the Dodgers in 2005,Bradley and IF Jeff Kent had a well known feud, he had an incident with umpire Mike Winters who was suspended by Baseball for provoking Bradley, who in turn hurt his knee during that argument.Bradley has had arguments who Fans, but most of his former teammates have said he was good in the Clubhouse. Bradley's intense attitude could be a positive in the Cubs otherwise bland Clubhouse. Bradley will be the Cubs RF with Kosuke Fukudome moving to CF depending of course how he looks during Spring Training.
In a deal that should be announced in the next day or so, the Cubs also are sending Pitcher Jason Marquis to Colorado in exchange for middle reliever Luis Vizcaino who spent time with both the White Sox and Brewers in the past.

GROBBER'S MONDAY RANTS---Jan 5,2009
Posted by: grobber33 on Monday, January 05, 2009 - 03:39 AM
|
***So much for North Carolina going undefeated! Boston College went into the Smith Center and stunned the soon to be less than #1 Tarheels Sunday night. UNC may still win the whole thing in early April, but they showed they can be had.
***The Bulls have a couple more games with so called beatable teams starting with Sacramento on Tuesday night, and the awful Oklahoma City Thunder(formerly Seattle)will be at the United Center Saturday.
***Until about a week or so ago,the National Networks had been playing up the Celtics,Lakers,Cavaliers and Magic as teams with a chance to win 70 games and even best the Bulls NBA mark of 72 set in 1995-95. Guess what? Not going to happen! Boston got beat Sunday by the Knicks(THAT'S RIGHT, THE KNICKS!) as former DePaul star Wilson Chandler lit the C's up for 31. Cleveland fell to the horrible Washington Buzzards(I know, Wizards)as "King" James was called for traveling as he tried to score the tying basket late. The Magic lost to Toronto. OK, the Lakers beat Portland, but they wont win 70 games either!
***There has been talk of a Gavin Floyd for Brian Roberts trade between the White Sox and Orioles this week. A couple of things on that. First, while Roberts is terrific, why would the Sox weaken their starting rotation by dealing Floyd who was starting to come into his own last year along with John Danks? Second, Andy McPhail seems to hesitate dealing Roberts to the Cubs and other Clubs last year, and Owner Peter Angelos does not really want to let Roberts go the easily.
***Will this be the week that the Cubs sign OF Milton Bradley? There are still many mixed thoughts on that!
***How is that San Diego Charger defense going under Ron Rivera so far? They just took out the hottest team in the Colts. The Bears have made one minor change to their Coaching staff so far,but will more be forthcoming?
***Now that the Minnesota Vikings have joined Atlanta,Indy and Miami on the 'Golf Course', one can see how weak the NFC North was this past season. The NFC West was said to be as bad or worse, but the Arizona Cardinals beat up on the Falcons and are still alive-at least for one more week.
***The Big Ten has been awful in Bowl games the past few years after a great 2002-03 Bowl season(when Ohio State won it all). But this year has been exceptionally awful. Ohio State faces Texas in Monday evening's Fiesta Bowl, and unless the Buckeyes pull the upset, the Big Ten would finish 1-6! Northwestern came very close in the Alamo Bowl before losing in overtime to Missouri. Iowa has been the one Big Ten member that has guaranteed that they can not RUN THE TABLE the wrong way.Thank heavens for South Carolina, which did not show up against the Hawkeyes.

Hawks bounce back from Winter Classic blues with 5-2 win over Calgary
Posted by: grobber33 on Monday, January 05, 2009 - 03:20 AM
|
The Blackhawks showed no Winter Classic hangover as they defeated the Calgary Flames 5-2,back of course in the United Center. Marty Havlat scored at 3:26 of the hockey game into a net that was pretty much vacated by Mikka Kiprusoff,Duncan Keith and Andrew Ladd got helpers on that one.The game was a bit chippy with three fights in less than the first period and a half. The Blackhawks Colin Fraser and the Flames Mark Giordano went at it at 9:41 of the first period which ended 1-0. Then in the second despised bad boy Todd Bertuzzi tied the game at 1:09 by deflecting a slap shot by Dion Phaneuf past Nikolai Khabibulin.Former Hawk Rene Bourque also picked up an assist. Next came back to back brawls-first involving the Hawks Ben Eager and Calgary's Robyn Regehr at 7:37,and only four second later, Matt Walker and the Flames Andre Roy had a knock down-drag out fight. The Hawks failed twice on the power play, but then when Aaron Johnson was sent off for tripping, the penalty killers went to work. Kris Versteeg stole a pass at center ice and broke in on the right side against former Hawk Adrian Aucoin, and fired one over Kiprusoff's left should-top shelf for the 5th shorty of the season by the Blackhawks. Then with :12 left in the period,Craig Conroy went for cross checking and it appeared that the Hawks would start the third period on the power play, but instead, they nailed the Flames with a dagger. Cory Sarich had a chance to clear the puck, but his poor effort ended up on the stick of Patrick Sharp who fed it to Dustin Byfuglien who in turn beat a stunned Kiprusoff with 1.1 second on the clock to make it 4-1 after two. Kiprusoff was pulled by Mike Keenan(Captain Hook)in favor of Curtis McElhinney to begin the third stanza. The Flames got a power play goal from Daymond Langkow on a nice feed from Jarome Iginla. The third period was dominated by Calgary as they outshot the Hawks 20-8,but Troy Brouwer made an unselfish cross crease pass to Sharp for an empty netter for the final.
NOTES---Shots on goal ended up 36 apiece....Attendance was 22,146.....Patrick Kane sat this one out and may miss a couple of additional games, still bothered by that hit he took in Detroit from former Hawk Daniel Cleary....Aucoin was booed every time he touched the puck.

NFC North cleaned out as Vikes bow to Eagles
Posted by: grobber33 on Monday, January 05, 2009 - 12:23 AM
|
MINNEAPOLIS---Say goodbye to the weak NFC North for this season now that Minnesota is gone. In the mean time, all but forgotten as a postseason contender just one month earlier, Andy Reid, Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles have a playoff win. Next up: the Super Bowl champions. Brian Westbrook caught a short pass out of the backfield and zigzagged through the Minnesota defense for a devastating 71-yard touchdown midway through the fourth quarter, and the Eagles spoiled the Vikings' first home playoff game in eight years with a 26-14 victory Sunday.Asante Samuel's 44-yard interception return of Tarvaris Jackson's errant pass in the second quarter set a tone for the kind of game most Vikings fans feared from the unpolished quarterback.Reid improved his playoff coaching record to 9-6, including at least one win each time the Eagles have qualified in his 10 years. He bested his buddy and former offensive coordinator Brad Childress in this one, and they spoke for several moments on the field after the game.Philadelphia will play next Sunday in New Jersey against the top-seeded Giants, sending Arizona to play Carolina in the other NFC semifinal on Saturday.

Nine is what Miami could score, and the Ravens eliminated them FOREVER MORE!
Posted by: grobber33 on Sunday, January 04, 2009 - 08:56 PM
|
MIAMI---Chad Pennington waited in front of his end zone, the last line of defense for the Miami Dolphins. A blocker buried him -- just like the Baltimore Ravens treated Pennington and the Dolphins all day. The block allowed Ed Reed to complete a 64-yard interception return for a touchdown, and the Ravens came up with four other takeaways Sunday to win 27-9, spoiling the Dolphins' first playoff game in seven seasons.Baltimore stuffed Miami's ground attack, had no problems with the Wildcat, and harried Pennington into uncharacteristic mistakes. After throwing only seven interceptions during the regular season, Pennington had four. With a rookie coach in John Harbaugh and a rookie quarterback in Joe Flacco, wild-card entrant Baltimore (12-5) won for the 10th time in 12 games and will play Saturday at NFC South champion Tennessee. The playoff victory was the first for the Ravens since they beat Miami in a first-round game in January 2002.The result put the brakes on this season's remarkable resurgence by the Dolphins (11-6), who won the AFC East after going 1-15 in 2007.A soft schedule contributed to Miami's turnaround, and there was nothing soft about the Ravens. They forced a flurry of turnovers against a team that tied an NFL record with only 13 during the regular season.Reed had two interceptions, and Jim Leonhard and Fabian Washington made one apiece. Terrell Suggs recovered a fumble by Patrick Cobbs early in the second half at the Miami 19, and four plays later Le'Ron McClain scored on an 8-yard run for a 20-3 lead.

Cold second half shooting does in Illini against Wolverines
Posted by: grobber33 on Sunday, January 04, 2009 - 08:47 PM
|
ANN ARBOR---Manny Harris had 16 points and four teammates also scored in double figures in #23 Michigan's 74-64 victory Sunday over Illinois to end the Fighting Illini's seven-game winning streak. The Wolverines (11-3, 1-1 Big Ten) needed a win to give them a chance to stay in the Top 25 and to maintain momentum earned with victories over Duke and UCLA.Illinois (13-2, 1-1) surged to the national radar with a winning streak that included a road victory over No. 9 Purdue on Tuesday and a win against then-No. 25 Missouri on a neutral court. The Illini had a school-record 19 losses last season after losing an average of just seven games in Weber's first four seasons with the traditionally strong program.DeShawn Sims had 13 points and nine rebounds, Laval Lucas-Perry scored 13 points, Zack Novak had 11 points despite missing much of the second half with a cut above his left eye, Zack Gibson added 10 and Kelvin Grady finished with nine points for the Wolverines.Gibson's dunk capped a 14-2 run that gave the Wolverines a 54-48 lead midway through the half. The 6-foot-10 center sealed the victory, faking right and driving left for another dunk to give Michigan a four-point lead with four minutes left.Early and often, Illini reserve guard Alex Legion heard boos because fans hadn't forgotten that he verbally committed to play for Michigan. Legion scored 10 points in his fifth game since becoming eligible after transferring from Kentucky.Calvin Brock led the Illini with 13 points and seven rebounds and Demetri McCamey had 11 points and 10 assists. Mike Davis had 10 points despite being slowed by tonsillitis. Trent Meacham, one of four Illini entering the game averaging 12.1 points, scored five points on 2-of-9 shooting.Michigan allowed the Illini to make just one-third of their shots in the second half after they connected on 59 percent in the first.

Colts lose cool in OT, Bolts advance
Posted by: grobber33 on Sunday, January 04, 2009 - 04:22 AM
|
SAN DIEGO--- Peyton Manning has his MVP award and nothing more, outdone again in January by the San Diego Chargers.Speedy little Darren Sproles scooted 22 yards for the winning score 6:20 into overtime and the Chargers beat the Colts 23-17 in an AFC wild-card game Saturday night, ending Indianapolis' nine-game winning streak a day after Manning won his third NFL MVP award.Sproles came up big on a night when the Chargers played the final 2½ quarters without LaDainian Tomlinson, who stood on the sideline in obvious discomfort from a groin injury.Fifty years after the Baltimore Colts won the first overtime game in league history by the same score over the New York Giants for the NFL title, Indianapolis wasn't so fortunate. It was victimized by Sproles, who rushed 23 times for 105 yards, caught five passes for 45 yards, had 106 yards on four kickoff returns and 72 on three punt runbacks. The Chargers (9-8) won the overtime toss. Indy's Darrell Reid called heads, but referee Ron Winter's flip came up tails. Sproles sent the Chargers into the second round of the playoffs, either at Tennessee or Pittsburgh, by finishing off the only series of overtime with his TD run around left end against an exhausted defense for the Colts (12-5).San Diego's winning drive was aided by two defensive holding calls, the second against Tim Jennings on third-and-8. On the next play, Colts linebacker Clint Session was whistled for grabbing Sproles' facemask. Sproles scored on the next play, shedding a defender at the 5-yard line.

Big Red wins it's first Home Playoff game since 1947(at Comiskey)

GLENDALE---The Arizona Cardinals have consecutive home playoff victories -- 61 years apart.Kurt Warner opened with a 42-yard touchdown pass to Larry Fitzgerald and connected with Anquan Boldin on a 71-yard scoring play as the Cardinals beat Atlanta 30-24 Saturday before a raucous, towel-waving crowd. It was the franchise's first home playoff game since the then-Chicago Cardinals beat Philadelphia at Comiskey Park to win the NFL championship in 1947.Atlanta rookie Matt Ryan was intercepted twice, was tackled in the end zone for a safety and fumbled the ball away on a botched handoff. That fumble was returned 26 yards by Antrel Rolle 52 seconds into the second half to put Arizona ahead for good.Atlanta's 60 yards rushing represented a season low.Arizona's Edgerrin James outgained Atlanta's Michael Turner, the NFL's No. 2 rusher.James, who has made it known he will not be back with the Cardinals next season, carried 16 times for 73 yards. Turner, who rushed for 1,699 yards in the regular season, had 42 yards in 18 attempts.Warner, in the playoffs for the first time since leading St. Louis to a second Super Bowl in 2001, was 19-of-32, 13-for-17 in the second half, for 271 yards. He was intercepted once.

Randy Foye scored 21 points, Al Jefferson added 18 points and 14 rebounds and the Minnesota Timberwolves won consecutive games for the first time this season, beating the free falling and short handed Bulls 102-92 on Saturday night.Trailing 73-72, Minnesota didn't score its first points in the fourth quarter until Foye made two free throws 4:06 in. Minnesota's first field goal didn't come until Jefferson made a jumper with 6:35 left to give the Wolves a 76-75 lead. Minnesota never trailed again and extended its lead to 79-75 on Foye's 3-point play with 6:03 left.Derrick Rose pulled the Bulls to 85-84 with 2:33 left, but the Wolves answered with Sebastian Telfair's jumper and Ryan Gomes' 3 with 2:02 left to make it 90-84.Rose finished with 22 points, and Tyrus Thomas had 15 points, seven rebounds and eight blocked shots for the Bulls, who have lost six of seven games. So much for the start of an easier schedule beginning with the lowly T-Wolves. Gomes finished with 19 points for Minnesota, which has won four of its last six games. The Wolves had 28 second-chance points to the Bulls' eight. The Wolves led by 10 in the third quarter, but relinquished the lead during a 10-0 Bulls run that got started on Ben Gordon's jumper with 6 seconds left in the third quarter. After Lindsey Hunter's layup in the fourth quarter, Andres Nocioni hit back-to-back 3s to give his team a 73-72 lead early in the fourth quarter. The Bulls, who were not competitive in their last two blowout losses to Orlando and Cleveland, got down early again. Rodney Carney had a dunk and a layup to put the Wolves up 32-19 midway through the second quarter. Both teams were dismal to start the game. The teams combined to miss their first 14 field-goal attempts. The Wolves lost starting point guard former Bull Kevin Ollie to a left dislocated elbow. He was injured by Gray coming down from a layup attempt early in the first quarter. The Wolves led 45-38 at the half. Kevin Love had 13 points and seven rebounds. The Bulls shot just 34.1 percent in the half. The only bright spot for the Bulls was Thomas, who had nine points, five blocked shots and three rebounds.
NOTES---Nocioni and Joakim Noah had an on-court spat during a blowout loss at Cleveland on Friday night. Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro apparently didn't have a problem with it. "I like when guys get on each other and show some intensity and show some will to win and kind of get after it a little bit. I like that," Del Negro said. ...Drew Gooden missed his 10th game of the season with a right ankle sprain. He will have an MRI on Monday. ...Luol Deng missed his fifth game because of a sprained left ankle. He's listed as day-to-day.

NU,UIC & Loyola lose, ISU stays unbeaten with win over Creighton

EVANSTON---Raymar Morgan had 22 points and a season-high 13 rebounds to lead No. 10 Michigan State to a 77-66 win over Northwestern on Saturday for their seventh straight victory.Kalin Lucas came on strong after a rough start, scoring 15 of his 18 points in the second half. Chris Allen scored 16 and provided the spark as the Spartans scored the first 12 points of the second half to turn a one-point deficit into an 11-point lead. That doused any notion of an upset and sent Michigan State (11-2, 2-0 Big Ten) to its 12th consecutive win over Northwestern (8-4, 0-2). It also gave the Spartans back-to-back double-digit road wins to start conference play. Allen's 3-pointer near the end of the first half cut it to 33-32, and he started the second by burying a jumper and converting another 3 after a dunk by Morgan. Allen finished the run with a driving scoop layup and free throw after Wildcats coach Bill Carmody got called for a technical, making it 44-33 with 15:23 left in the game. NU's Craig Moore (16 points) did all he could to keep it close, hitting back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the half to make it 51-46. But a putback by Morgan and jumper by Travis Walton made it 64-52 with seven minutes remaining and ended any lingering suspense.Morgan delivered one of his best performances of the season, hitting nine of 13 shots while falling two rebounds shy of his career high, and the Spartans had a 47-28 edge on the glass. Kevin Coble scored 12 of his 17 points in the first half, hitting two 3s and converting back-to-back baskets late in the half to tie it at 28. That drew a loud "Let's go 'Cats" chant from the student section and the cheers intensified when Moore hit a 3-pointer to give Northwestern a three-point lead with just over three minutes remaining.

PROVIDENCE---Weyinmi Efejuku scored 18 points to lead four Friars in double figures as Providence beat DePaul 62-54 on Saturday.Geoff McDermott added 13 points and 10 rebounds for Providence. The Friars used a balanced attack and scrappy defense to edge the visiting Blue Demons, who never led in the game but hung close throughout the second half.Poor perimeter shooting hurt DePaul (8-7, 0-2 Big East), which shot just 3-of-19 from beyond the arc. Providence (10-4, 2-0 Big East) opened the game on a 9-2 run and led by as much as 12 early.A Mac Koshwal jumper cut the Friars' lead to 44-43 with 10:20 to go in the second half, but Providence responded with an 11-2 run. The Blue Demons never got within a possession again. Will Walker had 14 points to lead DePaul. Mac Koshwal and Dar Tucker added 10 rebounds apiece.
------------------------------------------------------
NEW YORK---Paris Horne was there every time Kyle McAlarney turned around or went around a screen. That defensive performance was enough to give St. John's a chance at an upset, and the Red Storm came through with a 71-65 victory over No. 7 Notre Dame on Saturday.Horne's tenacious, high-energy effort on the Fighting Irish's 3-point specialist set the tone for what is easily St. John's biggest win of the season.D.J. Kennedy scored 20 points, including four free throws in the final 15 seconds, and had 10 rebounds for the Red Storm (10-4, 1-1 Big East). St. John's ended a three-game losing streak by holding Notre Dame to one of its worst 3-point shooting games of the season. The Fighting Irish went 4-for-17, including a 1-for-5 day by McAlarney.Luke Harangody had 28 points and 14 rebounds for the Fighting Irish (10-3, 1-1), who had won four straight.

***The Blackhawks, who owned the Detroit Red Wings last season, are better this year, but Detroit has gotten up for the Hawks, now going 4-0 in the meetings after Thursday's 6-4 comeback win at Wrigley Field in the Winter Classic. The Hawks, after winning nine in a row,now have dropped their last two-both to Detroit. The Hawks get back to the United Center Sunday at 6pm against Calgary.
***By the way, that 9 game winning streak that the Wings snapped Tuesday night, was a REGULAR SEASON team record, but what was not reported,or mentioned by the Hawks was the fact that they won 11 in a row during the 1992 Playoff run to the Stanley Cup Finals. The Hawks trailed St.Louis 2 games to 1,but then took the next three to advance. They then proceed to sweep four straight from both Detroit and Edmonton. Unfortunately, they then lost four in a row to Pittsburgh in the Finals, and have not been that far in the post Season since.
***Blackhawk organist Frank Pellico got to return to Wrigley Field where he was the Cubs organist in the early and mid 70's.
***It was sure surreal to be in Wrigley for a game in the dead of Winter for those of us who remember the Bears playing their Home Games there through 1970. The cold and winds Thursday during the Winter Classic remind one of December Bear games at Clark and Addison.
***Now the question is, what kind of condition will the field be in for the Cubs who have their Home opener in three Months?
***Northwestern lost another Bowl. At least this time in the Alamo Bowl, they were not only competitive, but they led most of the game and should have beaten Missouri. Fact remains, that NU Fans still have every right to still be pissed off at the Outback Bowl which snubbed the Wildcats in 2000-01 despite the fact they were Big Ten Co-Champs,had beaten Michigan and finished ahead of Ohio State who was picked by the Outback committee and got killed by South Carolina.
***This year, the Outback Bowl liars(who said they would make up the 2001 snubbing at some point)took Iowa instead of NU. Iowa LOST to NU this past regular season in Iowa City, and the Cats finished ahead of the Hawkeyes in the standings. The Outback this year was one sided as Iowa killed lifeless South Carolina. The Wildcats also would have had their way against the Gamecocks, but instead got a more talented Missouri team that did not have their heads in the Alamo Bowl, but still pulled it out in Overtime.
***I have no idea what the Cubs were doing Wednesday when Jim Hendry dealt one of their more versatile players in Mark DeRosa to Cleveland for three lower level pitchers. That, right after they signed journeyman IF(and one time White Sox product)Aaron Miles who most recently has been with the Cardinals. Some think that the three pitchers,or perhaps two of them are going to be used to somehow still get a deal done with San Diego for Jake Peavy. Great! But the Padres were hemming and hawing last month, just like Andy McPhail and the Orioles did last year with Brian Roberts, who the last time I checked is still with the O's.
***Milton Bradley on talent alone would be an interesting addition to the Cubs, but everyone knows he brings as much baggage as most Airlines lose during the Holiday Season. He also has spent plenty of time on the disabled list.Do they REALLY want to go there? I remember people on the Sox dismissing any issues Albert Belle brought to the South Side, but his two year sting there was a flop.Yeah I know he had great numbers the SECOND half of 2008,but that was when the Sox had fallen out of the race. Before that,Belle was as unclutch as could be. Bradley could be a good addition to the Cubs, but also could fracture that Clubhouse completely.
***And this is a team that has plenty of issues of course. Long forgotten(unless you are the Cubs Front Office reminding people about it)is the now meaningless 97 wins in the regular season. WHO CARES about that crap. This team was a disgrace in the Playoffs for the second year in a row. Aramis Ramirez and Alfonso Soriano both disappeared against the Dodgers in the Post Season and they had lots of Company. Derrek Lee hit a little bit. Remember that in 2003,Ramirez hit a ton for the Cubs in the Post Season, and Lee killed the Cubs as a Marlin. DeRosa had a two run homer in game one of this year's NLDS against LA which gave them a brief lead that lasted until Ryan Dempster lost the ability to throw strikes, and gave up a Slam to James Loney.
***By the way, with Kerry Wood now again a teammate of DeRosa with the Tribe.the Cubs have questions in the Closer roll. Carlos Marmol has not yet proved he can handle that role(remember the stretch in June and July when he could not get anybody out?). Kevin Gregg, who the Cubs picked up from Florida,He did convert 32-36 save chances for the Marlins, but in a big Ballpark, and his ERA was 3.41. Also, he only had 58 K's to go with 37 walks(meaning batters put the ball in play against him)so he's not the type of closer you want-who can come in and blow batters away. Just ask Daryle Ward who sat on a flat Gregg pitch in August and drilled a pinch homer in Pitcher Friendly Dolphin Stadium.
***That Bulls New Year's Eve afternoon game with Orlando was by far their biggest fiasco of the season! To say they played like garbage is being charitable. The effort stunk and as Ben Gordon admitted, they were not ready to play. And now they play at Cleveland, another of a good six teams they do not match up with at all.
